Gartner: CEOs Predict “Substantial” Digital Transformation

In the newly-released 2016 Gartner CEO and Senior Business Executive Survey, half of CEOs expect their industries to be “substantially or unrecognizably transformed” by digital business process automation.

According to the report, “As economies slow, competition intensifies. No surprise, then, that there was a noticeable leap in CEO mentions of ‘customer’ explicitly in top business priorities for 2016.” The report recommends that CEOs and CIOs collaborate to prioritize tech initiatives that focus on end-user customers and new core talent.

Those initiatives include business process automation projects to streamline operations and replace routine, manual tasks such as document handling, data entry, routing/approvals to improve employee satisfaction, enhance the customer experience and drive new levels of efficiency.

According to the Gartner report, companies want to remain competitive in the digital economy should “re-set portfolio weightings to favor projects that improve customer experience in such areas as user interface design, reducing waiting times, simplifying and improving service, and rewarding customer loyalty”

Making the Most of Existing Systems and Data

In many cases, companies today already have the right systems in place to support the kinds of initiatives described by Gartner’s survey participants and recommended by the report’s authors. What’s missing is the ‘connective tissue’ to turn the enterprise resource systems (ERPs) and Enterprise Content Management Systems (ECMs) into the engines of truly intelligent, fully automated processes.

Smart Process Automation Platforms, like Artsyl’s docAlpha, integrate with existing business systems to transform the unstructured data in documents stored in business and ECM systems into structured data that can be stored and managed in ERP systems—automatically, with minimal human intervention. For employees, this translates into the elimination of routine tasks like data entry and document filing. For executives, it means that data and documents are transformed into information instantly, resulting in greater visibility to critical business information. For customers, this can translate into greater responsiveness and better service at a lower cost.

That’s just the beginning. Transforming documents and data into actionable information can then drive automated processes for routing data/documents for transactional processes such as accounts payable or sales order fulfillment and automatically creating transactions within ERP or other business systems in a way that is fully transparent and instantly auditable.

Beyond transactional processes, smart process automation platforms can support better business decisions by providing more timely, accurate access to the data that informs the organization’s key performance indicators.

Flexibility and Adaptability are Key

The outlooks expressed by Gartners survey participants are hardly new—the vision of intelligent, integrated systems to deliver real time access to critical data and automate processes has been around for well over a decade. What’s changed is an approach to software intelligence that has resulted in more flexible, adaptable and affordable solutions that can support real world business challenges without requiring continuous coding and customization.

That new reality is what has corporate executives so excited about transforming their businesses and achieving new levels of efficiency and effectiveness.
