In 2013, when Appalachian State University announced that its sports programs were stepping up to the FBS level and joining the Sun Belt, it wasn’t just its rivals (like FBS member Georgia Southern) that took note. Graduating high school seniors suddenly began to line up to join the school and the volume of admission applications increased.

After an initial struggle at the FBS level, the Appalachian State football team went on a 6-game winning streak, with upset wins over last year's Sun Belt co-champions Arkansas State and Louisiana–Lafayette.

That’s when admissions applications took off, according to Associate Director of Admissions – Operations, Sarah-Davis Cagle.

As the person primarily responsible for ensuring that “App” responded quickly to qualified prospective students, Cagle understood that the only way to translate the surge in applications greater enrollment was to respond faster than humanly possible. Which meant relying on automation to extract enrollment information from transcripts and, in some cases, additional application documents like background checks.

Appalachian State relies on the docAlpha Digital Transformation Platform to relieve the burden of manually rekeying information from paper and electronic transcripts and related documents that come in a variety of formats. By intelligently identifying this data, the Appalachian State admissions staff can focus less time on data entry and more time being responsive to the needs of prospective students.
